Citrus Insect Pests
Key Citrus Pests in the Month of April
Citricola scale: The 2nd instar nymphs are moving down the branches and will be rapidly molting into adults near the tips of the branches in the coming weeks.
Earwigs: Earwigs have developed into 3rd, 4th instar nymphs and adults and are moving from burrows and tree wraps into the trees.
California red scale: The biofix of male flight occurred towards the end of March and the males are still flying. It developes when average daily temperature is above 53oF.
Cotton aphid: Cotton aphid began to infest citrus in mid-March. Numbers are starting to decline as leaves harden off and natural enemies attack them.
Citrus red mite: Red mite populations are actively multiplying right now and if predacious mites are not reducing them, acaricides may be needed.
Katydids: Katydids are hatching and beginning to infest citrus. Slow acting insecticides should be used prior to petal fall and fast acting insecticides should be used at petal fall to prevent fruit damage.
